Filing taxes, it’s always that phrase around this time of the year that creates an unnerving feeling. Here at Tax2Checks, we want to offer you some tips to follow if you are getting your taxes done, especially if it’s your first time.

We have to file taxes every year, so why make the process so alien to us? Here are some tips and things to consider when you need to file your taxes. These tips are meant to ease the process and help you have a better understanding of the things you need to do before you even start.

1. Do I Have To File Taxes?

The bottom line is, probably yes. There are many factors that will decide what type of filing you will be doing, and there are also other factors that would suggest the way to do them. It’s always recommended to file your taxes, even if your condition can guarantee you that you don’t. You never know if there is a return on the taxes you paid for that year. There’s always a chance that filing your taxes can yield some money back from withholdings that you agreed on and your employer put toward your taxes.

2. Do It Yourself, Or Hire Someone?

There are plenty of resources out there that can help you figure out how to file your taxes. That does not mean that it makes one way or another the right or the wrong approach. These options have their advantages and disadvantages, and it’s up to you to weigh one against the other.

Doing it yourself saves you money, but it can prove to be a headache if you don’t know what you are doing. Hiring someone to do taxes for you will take away the effort you might need to put into making sure that everything is in the right line of the document and that it’s all correct, but it can cost you, in some cases, up to a few hundred dollars.

There is a third choice, one that has been made more common lately, which is the use of tax software. This option usually lands in the middle of the other two. The software can guide you through the lines you have to fill and asks you the right questions about possible things you might have done in the previous year. All this is done to answer whether or not you are placing yourself in the right brackets and ranks, so your taxes are tailored to your situation. The good part about the software is that it’s cheaper than hiring someone to do your taxes, yet it can give you just as good of results.

3. What Do I Need To File Taxes?

You will need some documents to be able to file your taxes. If you have them before you start, it can expedite the process.

  • Social Security Number
  • W-2. You would receive this from your job and it will tell you how much you made in the year, and how much you have already put aside for taxes.
  • 1099 form. You may get one of these if you worked as a contractor or you offer your services to someone that was not your employer and got paid for doing it.
  • Last year’s federal and state tax returns.

Those are the main documents that you’ll need, although some others can help you with your taxes as well. Medical and educational expenses, retirement account contributions, charitable donations, property taxes and mortgage interests, and more. These items can help you reduce the amount of money you owe for taxes.

4. Do I Wait Until The Last Day To File?

Filing taxes can be tiresome. It’s strongly encouraged to file your taxes early to avoid problems in the future. Delivering after the stated date, or not delivering at all, can cause you to incur fees and penalties that rack up every month that you don’t pay your dues.

You do not have to deliver the paperwork the second you are done with it. Finishing early can allow you to come back on a later date to make sure that everything you wrote down on your forms is correct and you are not missing anything. Another way in which this can benefit you is if you are waiting for other documents or paperwork to add before you submit, you can complete everything else. That way, all you have to do is add the information and file instead of doing the entire form in its entirety at the last moment.
